Veneers were originally a temporary fixture for stars in film while the cameras were rolling, but over time they became perfected and able to adhere permanently. With more improvements made, they became accessible for anyone looking to recreate their smile.
Veneers are versatile! We love porcelain veneers at Life Dentistry because they can correct a number of smile concerns without having to combine different types of cosmetic and restorative treatments.
If your smile concerns are related to different tooth shapes and sizes, the shade of your teeth, and minor misalignments, veneers might be the smile solution for you.
Another benefit of veneers is their resistance to staining. We do advise you keep in mind that veneers usually require preparation and are a permanent solution that requires commitment.
The most common cosmetic smile concern is tooth color.
You might think teeth whitening and concerns about the shades of our enamel are relatively new, but the practice goes back a few centuries. In 3000 B.C., for example, people would use small twigs called “chew sticks” to scrape particles off their teeth. Luckily, we’ve got more appealing options today!
There are plenty of teeth whitening products, or rather products that claim to possess whitening power, available in most grocery and drugstore aisles—but do they work?
You might see some improvement with certain pastes, rinses, and strips (usually equivalent to a cleaning with our hygienist), but there’s a chance your gums and enamel will become sensitive.
Another thing you might not realize is that restorations like crowns and fillings won’t respond to whitening. For optimal results, you should ask Dr. Duff about our in-office and take-home whitening options!
A quick, painless, and economical fix for rough edges.
If you’re a nail biter, teeth grinder, jaw clencher, sports player that forgets to wear a mouthguard, or you have a habit of using your teeth as tools (stubborn bottle caps?), you’re at an increased risk of enamel wear and damage. Sometimes the damage will require restoration; other times bonding can help.
Bonding can be restorative, too, but is commonly used in a cosmetic way. Think of bonding as being similar to veneers, but without the commitment and cost.
The smile concerns bonding can treat include chips, gapping between teeth, teeth of different shapes and sizes, and staining—all with minimal or no preparation at all!
The procedure consists of molding a composite resin (the same BPA-free type we use to place fillings) to your affected teeth, smoothing it, then hardening it with a light.
Happy with your teeth, but less so with your gums?
Gum contouring, sometimes referred to as a gum lift, can remove gum tissue that’s hiding more of your beautiful crowns than you’d like. Gum contouring can also create a more even gum line if you’ve got just one or a couple of teeth that yearn to be as free as their neighbors.
Contouring is a completely customizable and safe procedure. Some patients fear removing gum tissue will expose their roots, but we only remove excess tissue and expose more crown.
Having a gummier smile doesn’t make you more susceptible to gum disease or cavities, but if you happen to experience these troubles, some contouring might be required for restorations.
